WTO: US Opposes Okonjo Iweala As Consensus Candidate For DG Position

Following an earlier report on the emergence of Nigerian economist and expert, Okonjo Iweala, as the World Trade Organization (WTO) consensus candidate to lead as its new Director-General (DG), the United States Government has opposed the move. 

According to sources, the US is reportedly in support of South Korean's Trade Minister, Yoo-Myung hee, who is Okonjo Iweala's rival opponent jostling for the WTO DG. 

WTO Spokesman, Keith Rockwell, as quoted saying by AFP, disclosed that 27 delegations had decided during Wednesday, October 28, held meeting. 

“One delegation could not support the candidacy of Dr. Ng0zi and said they would continue (supporting) South Korean minister Yoo. That delegation was the United States of America,” he noted. 

With the latest opposition from the US, a final decision and official statement is being awaited from the global trade body.
