House Of Reps Clarifies Plan To Scrap NYSC

The Nigerian House of Representatives has clarified that there is no plan to scrap the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme for eligible Nigerian graduates.

This was affrmed by the Chairman House of Reps Committee on Youth, Yemi Adaramodu, in Abuja, at the official unveiling of nine books on NYSC and Maiden NYSC Film in commemoration of the 48th anniversary of the scheme.

According to Adaramodu, the NYSC scheme is the most successful Nigerian programme for promoting and fostering Nigeria's unity.

The Nigeria's constitution of the Alteration bill (2020) which is seeking to repeal the NYSC act, is billed to pass its Second Reading in the Lower Chambers as some lawmakers feel it has outlived its usefulness.

Sponsor of the controversial bill, Mr Awaji-Inombek Abiante, in the explantory memorandum of the proposal, had gave many reasons why the scheme should be scrapped.

Adaramodu reacting to the proposal in his words said;

"Anybody is free to sponsor a bill, but the Speaker and the rest of the House believe that that scheme has come to stay in Nigeria

"The scheme is going nowhere and it is not the plan of the National Assembly to scrap it."
