The Republic of Ireland has reached a deal to return a whooping sum of €5.5m ($6.5m), looted by former Nigerian Military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, to the Nigerian government.
Confirmed by Ireland Minister of Justice and Equality, Helen McEntee disclosed that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) followed an European court order recently issued regarding the funds.
The funds were frozen by the Ireland Criminal Assets Bureau in 2014, under request from the administration of the then president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.
A statement from Helen McEntee reads;
“The return of these assets will be the first time that Ireland has taken such action and will be a concrete demonstration of Ireland’s commitment to international cooperation in the fight against corruption and to assisting countries which have been adversely affected by corruption in the past, and is in line with our international obligations as a signatory to the UN Convention Against Corruption,” (Culled from SaharaReports)
