Nigeria's Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has stated it would take the country about 120 years to have the required number of doctors it needs.
The Minister while decrying the high level of brain drain in the country's health sector, revealed that statistics have shown that the doctor-patient ratio in Nigeria falls far short of the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations which stipulates one doctor ratio to 600 patients, adding that this contracts to the current 1 to 6000 ratio in Nigeria.
This was made known by the Minister during the Maiden matriculation ceremony of the Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo (FUHSO) held at the institution temporary site in Otada, Otukpo LGA of Benue state on Friday, November 5.
"It will take Nigeria about 120 years to have the number of doctors it needs, assuming all our doctors remain in the country," he said.
Mallam Adamu Adamu further lamented on the quality of skills, competencies and training needed in the health sector which he said had become problematic.
